＜prologue＞
I started a blog called “The Baby Boomer Generation’s Miscellaneous Blog”（Dankai-sedai no garakutatyou:団塊世代の我楽多（がらくた）帳） in July 2018, about a year before I fully retired. More than six years have passed since then, and the number of articles has increased considerably.
So, in order to make them accessible to people who don’t understand Japanese, I decided to translate my past articles into English and publish them.
It may sound a bit exaggerated, but I would like to make this my life’s work.
It should be noted that haiku and waka （Japanese short fixed form poems） are quite difficult to translate into English, so some parts are written in Japanese.
If you are interested in haiku or waka and would like to know more, please read introductory or specialized books on haiku or waka written in English.
I also write many articles about the Japanese language. I would be happy if these inspire more people to want to learn Japanese.

1. Differences Between Air Circulators and Electric Fans
Air circulators and fans both use rotating blades to blow air, and while they look similar, they serve very different purposes.
(1) Air Circulator
Air circulators create a breeze that circulates air to “lower the indoor temperature.” By circulating the air in a room, they even out the temperature and lower the perceived temperature.
Since cool (cold air) tends to accumulate on the floor and warm (warm air) tends to accumulate on the ceiling, mixing the air evens out the temperature throughout the room, making it more comfortable and increasing the efficiency of heating and cooling, saving energy.
Air circulators create a linear, long-reaching breeze.
(2) Electric Fan
Air circulators create a cooling breeze to “lower the surface temperature of the body.” By moving the air against the body, like a round fan, you feel cooler.
Air circulators create a breeze that reaches a wide area.
2. What if you’re unsure whether to buy a circulator or a fan?
(1) If you’ll mainly be using it in conjunction with an air conditioner, get a circulator. If you’ll be using it alone, get a fan.
(2) If you want both functions, get a fan with a circulator function.
(3) Which is cheaper in terms of electricity: a fan or a circulator?
There’s almost no difference in electricity costs.

(2) Quietness
If you are looking for a quiet circulator for your living room or bedroom, be sure to check its quietness.
(3) Differences Between AC and DC Motors
Circulators come in two types: AC motor and DC motor.
AC motor types are relatively inexpensive and have simple functions. DC motor types often offer precise airflow adjustment and a wide range of features.
For year-round use, we recommend the DC motor type, which consumes less energy.
(4) Oscillation and Angle Adjustment
Circulators with oscillating and angle adjustment functions circulate the air throughout the room more efficiently, reducing the temperature difference between the ceiling and floor and preventing overheating or overcooling.
