＜prologue＞
I started a blog called “The Baby Boomer Generation’s Miscellaneous Blog”（Dankai-sedai no garakutatyou:団塊世代の我楽多（がらくた）帳） in July 2018, about a year before I fully retired. More than six years have passed since then, and the number of articles has increased considerably.
So, in order to make them accessible to people who don’t understand Japanese, I decided to translate my past articles into English and publish them.
It may sound a bit exaggerated, but I would like to make this my life’s work.
It should be noted that haiku and waka （Japanese short fixed form poems） are quite difficult to translate into English, so some parts are written in Japanese.
If you are interested in haiku or waka and would like to know more, please read introductory or specialized books on haiku or waka written in English.
I also write many articles about the Japanese language. I would be happy if these inspire more people to want to learn Japanese.

1. What is matcha?
“Matcha” is a type of green tea that is drunk in the uniquely Japanese tea ceremony or tea gathering, but it seems that “matcha” has recently become very popular overseas as well.
“Matcha” is made by powdering the leaves of the “Camellia sinensis” (tea tree). The leaves are steamed, dried, crushed to remove impurities such as veins, and then ground into powder using a tea mill.
2. Old Matcha Collaboration Products
When I was a child, I preferred “milk” or “azuki（red bean）” for popsicles and avoided “matcha”. As an adult, however, I have come to think that “matcha” is not so bad.
Japanese sweets using matcha have long been available, such as “Uiro” by Toraya of Ise and “Momiji Manju” by Nishikido of Hiroshima. Matcha ice cream and matcha soft serve ice cream are also familiar.
3. Recent Matcha Collaboration Products
Recently, however, “matcha sweets,” which are collaborations with Western sweets, seem to have become much more common.
Even I know what “Matcha Cheesecake”, “Matcha Daifuku”, “Matcha Pudding”, “Matcha Tiramisu”, “Matcha Chocolate”, and “Matcha Latte” (“Matcha” + “Steamed Milk”) are. There are also products that use “Izumo Matcha” such as “Izumo Matcha Chocolate Terrine” and “Izumo Matcha Gelato” that emphasize the local flavor.

However, when it comes to “matcha coffee,” “matcha cappuccino,” and “matcha black tea,” I’ｍ left wondering, “what’s going on?”
“Matcha coffee” is a drink made by mixing matcha with coffee. Many people (including me) wonder if the two go well together, but it turns out that they are surprisingly good and delicious. As proof, in 2011 Coca-Cola released a canned coffee containing Uji matcha called “Georgia Cross Japanese Style.” It is also sold as “Cantafe Japanesque” on the online store Brooks Coffee Market. UCC offers a recipe that involves adding 1/2 teaspoon of matcha to regular coffee.
“Matcha Cappuccino” seems to be popular, as it can still be found on “Amazon” and “Rakuten Ichiba”. When I heard “cappuccino,” I immediately thought of “coffee,” but “Matcha Cappuccino” was actually “matcha” + “steamed milk” + “foamed milk.”
Is “Matcha Black Tea” made by mixing a little bit of “matcha” into “black tea”? It is sold as “Matcha Royal Black Tea” by Mlesna Tea, which says that it is “black tea with the taste and aroma of matcha”. The message written on the package is said to be very unique and impactful. If you are interested, please look for it on “Amazon” or “Rakuten Ichiba”.
