I started a blog called “The Baby Boomer Generation’s Miscellaneous Blog”（Dankai-sedai no garakutatyou:団塊世代の我楽多（がらくた）帳） in July 2018, about a year before I fully retired. More than six years have passed since then, and the number of articles has increased considerably.

For movie and drama lovers, “subscription-based all-you-can-watch video distribution services” have become indispensable.

U-NEXT” is particularly attractive in that it offers more than 5,000 special features and a wide selection of products carefully selected by professionals in each genre, and points that can be used in various ways are awarded every month.

In this issue, we will show you how to register for U-NEXT. Of course, a one-month free trial is also available.

１．What is U-NEXT?

U-NEXT has one of the largest lineups in Japan, boasting an overwhelming number of approximately 160,000 titles (including more than 140,000 unlimited viewing titles).

The fee for the all-you-can-watch plan is slightly higher than other services at ¥1990/month (excluding tax), but more than 2,000 titles are updated each month, and the hottest new releases are offered as early as possible through advance delivery.

More than 70 magazines are available for unlimited reading, and more than 420,000 comics and books can be purchased using points.

Another unique feature of U-NEXT is the “Family Account” service. This service allows you to add up to three “child accounts” to one “parent account” for free, for which you pay a monthly fee. If four family members or friends register for the service, they can use U-NEXT’s unlimited viewing plan for 500 yen per person.

Not all videos on U-NEXT can be enjoyed as much as you want. New releases and other new releases are mainly available for rental, and you must pay for them each time. However, “U-NEXT points” can be used to watch rental movies, and since 1,200 U-NEXT points (equivalent to 1,200 yen) are granted every month within the unlimited viewing fee, you will be able to watch about 3 paid contents per month.

２．How to register (free trial) with U-NEXT

To use U-NEXT, first apply for the “31-day free trial. When the trial period ends, the service will be automatically renewed to the “Unlimited Video Viewing Service” for a monthly fee of ¥1990, but there is no charge if you cancel during the free trial period.

To apply for the free trial, please visit the official website below.

The same applies whether you are using a smartphone or a computer, but since the procedure is not available through a smartphone application, please access the site through a browser such as Safari or Chrome.

The registration page will appear with an easy-to-understand summary of U-NEXT’s features and other information. While confirming the contents, tap “First, 31-day free trial” and then “Next.

You will be prompted to enter your application information for the 31-day free trial. In addition to unlimited viewing, the free trial gives you 600 points, so you can enjoy rental movies for free within your points.

Enter your name, date of birth, e-mail address, password, phone number, and area of residence (region/state), and tap “Next” to proceed. You can also set your login password here.

Be sure to properly check the free period end date displayed here. Next, enter your credit card information. For smartphones, in addition to credit card payment, you can also select “docomo payment,” “au kantan payment,” or “Softbank (Y-mobile) Collective Payment” carrier payment.

After entering the payment information, tap “Submit.

This completes the registration.

You can add an account later, so we will skip it here.

The free trial gives you 600 points, which you can use to purchase rentals of movies marked with “points” in the browser version, but if you do not have enough points, you must pay separately to charge them.

Note that in the app version, these points are indicated as “U Coins,” but for titles with a coin notation, the points are consumed for the price.

３．How to cancel or withdraw from U-NEXT (free trial)

After the 31-day free trial period including the free trial application date, you will become a paid member and the monthly fee of ¥1990 will be automatically deducted. If you decide not to continue after the free trial period, please cancel your membership during the free trial period.
